Looking for a perfect winter day trip from Seoul? There's a super fun winter festival where you can try ice fishing! The Cheongpyeong Ice Fishing Festival is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy Korea's winter wonderland which is easily accessible, taking just 1-2 hours from Seoul depending on your transportation choice.

This festival is super popular with locals, and the festival site is where college students often visit for college MT. It's a great chance to experience real Korean winter culture while having tons of fun. Plus, the area is absolutely beautiful - perfect for taking amazing photos!


When & Where Can I Go?

The festival runs from December 28, 2024, to March 3, 2025, and it's open every day from 8 AM to 5 PM. You'll find it in Gapyeong, a beautiful area famous for its clean rivers and mountains. Don't worry about finding it - it's really easy to get there from Seoul!

What Can I Do There?

Here's what you can try at the festival:

  • Ice fishing for trout (₩20,000)
  • Ice fishing for smelt (₩20,000)
  • Catch trout with your bare hands (₩30,000 - you're guaranteed to catch 2!)
  • Catch smelt with nets (₩10,000)
  • Go ice sledding (₩10,000)

First Time Ice Fishing? No Problem!

Never been ice fishing before? Don't worry! The festival area is divided into three zones, and there are plenty of friendly staff to help you get started. Here's a fun tip: the best time to catch fish is when they release new ones into the water, which happens twice a day - around 10 AM and 2 PM.


The Best Part? Eating Your Catch!

After you catch your fish, you can have it cooked right there at the festival! Choose from:

  • Fresh raw fish (sashimi)
  • Grilled fish
  • Spicy fish soup
  • Spicy fish salad

The festival restaurant prices are really reasonable:

  • Grilled fish or sashimi: ₩3,000 per fish
  • Spicy fish salad: ₩13,000
  • Fish soup: ₩10,000


How Do I Get There?

If you're taking public transport:

  • Take an express bus from Dong Seoul Terminal (50 minutes)
  • Or take the train to Cheongpyeong Station and enjoy a short walk

If you're driving:

  • Just follow the Chuncheon Expressway
  • Exit at Hwado IC
  • Put "청평설빙송어빙어축제입구" in your navigation app
  • Free parking available at the festival site

Quick Tips for a Great Visit

  • Dress warmly! You'll be out on the ice.
  • Bring waterproof boots if you have them.
  • Don't bring outside food or coolers (they're not allowed).
  • All fishing equipment is provided, so you don't need to bring any.
  • Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
